The Peters Canyon Elementary School Library Book Club is a program celebrating your child’s birthday in a special way. Participation in the program involves a $20.00 donation per child. During the school year, your child’s birthday (or half year for summer birthdays) he or she will get to choose a brand new book from our wonderful selection of titles that have already been selected for our library.
Please complete and online form anytime between September-March closer to your child birthday.
To complete the form, please click on this link and register for your account. When you log into your account, you will navigate to My Account (to the right) and then click on My Forms.
A special book plate will be placed inside the front cover with your child’s name, as well as the date of their birthday. A photo will also be taken of your child with their choice of book and will be on display all year. Your child will be the first to check out the new book. F.R.I.E.N.D.S CLUB
A group of Special Educators determined that there was a need for an organized student group designed to stimulate and encourage relationship development among all students at Peters Canyon Elementary and so the F.R.I.E.N.D.S. club was created.
The acronym stands for “Facilitating Relationships and Interactions in Everyday Naturally Developing Situations.” The mission of the club is to provide opportunities for typically developing children and children of varying uniqueness to interact with and form relationships. A large focus of the club is to not only develop empathy towards all students at Peters Canyon Elementary, but to build upon the character traits needed to become compassionate and successful adults.
At the start of the school year, a letter is sent out to all 5thgrade students seeking their interest in applying for a Mentor position with the F.R.I.E.N.D.S. club. The content of the letter includes sample character traits of a great Mentor (kind, patient, sincere, compassionate, polite, and helpful), a description of the club, the mission of the club, and club meeting time. The application requires the students to complete a ‘self reflection’ series of questions and obtain approval signatures from their parents and classroom teacher. The committee reviews the applications, makes mentor determinations, and announces the selected mentors during the 1stschool-wide Flag Assembly of the school year.
The F.R.I.E.N.D.S. club meets on Fridays during recess/lunch. The role of the mentor includes, but is not limited to: encouraging involvement amongst the club members, cooperative participation, to guide and assist those in need, to serve as a leader, to be positive role models, and to demonstrate citizenship qualities.
Incentives are provided for F.R.I.E.N.D.S. club Mentors by maintenance of service log hours. The Mentors are awarded different levels of medals based on their hours of contribution. The levels include: Platinum for over 18 hours of service, Gold for15-18 hours of service, Silver for 11-14 hours of service, and Bronze for 8-10 hours of service.
A calendar of events is designed for each month to provide a variety of engaging activities for the students. The Mentors gather at the beginning of the year to brainstorm a list of activities. The many events scheduled include: picnics, board games, playing baseball, pumpkin carving and decorating for Halloween, parachute games, Thanksgiving feast, Holiday parties, playground play, making tye-dye club t-shirts, electronic games, etc. Birthday celebrations occur at the end of each month with a card signed by all club members, a special treat, and a Happy Birthday song.
In addition to on-campus activities, multiple opportunities are scheduled throughout the year to join the F.R.I.E.N.D.S. club at off-campus events. Some event options include: Autism Speaks walk, Dino Dash, bowling, gathering on the weekend at the park, etc.
Fundraising events to promote team collaboration and club awareness include: Halloween “Boo-Grams” to raise money for PCE sports equipment, spring “friend” grams, and involvement with organized school-wide fundraising events such as Pioneer Day.
The Peters Canyon Elementary F.R.I.E.N.D.S. club committee includes: Erica Charlton, Speech-Language Pathologist, and Amanda Correll and Robyn Strong, Special Day Class-Special Education Teachers.
Full support and assistance is also provided by the Peters Canyon Elementary Principal, General Education Teachers/Staff, TUSD Autism Program Manager, TUSD Occupational Therapist, Parents, Families, and the PTO.
